May 9 -- Sturgeon Bay MN to Lake Bluff IL (Day 84)

Another long day of driving, mostly along (or close to) the lake shore. At times Lake Michigan was clearly visible on our right as we drove south towards Chicago but other times we were a few miles or so inland. We drove through a number of Wisconsin communities - Two Rivers, Manitowoc, Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha. Some were nice (some REALLY nice), others not so much.

We'd thought about taking the car ferry across Lake Michigan, from Manitowoc WI to Ludington MI but decided that would jeopardize our plan to touch down in Illinois and Indiana and put a hurting on our plan to have travelled in the all the lower 48 states by the end of our trip. I told Dolores the 4 hour cross-lake trip would have been like a mini-cruise. Oh, well. Maybe another time.

We stopped at a park along the river in Whitefish Bay to have a lunch of sorts - string cheese and beef sticks we bought from a local cheesemaker (Renard's) back in the peninsula. We took a short walk down the bank to the edge of Lake Michigan to a small beach. Really picturesque.

We didn't stop in Milwaukee but we did drive through the downtown section where they have their "riverwalk" just so we could get see the "Bronze Fonz" statue.

Probably the funniest thing we've seen in a long time was in somebody's front yard along Lakeshore Dr (Rt 32) in Cudahy, WI. Not sure what the neighbors think.

Tomorrow, we head through Chicago and on to Indiana (maybe a stop in South Bend at Notre Dame??), then north and east through Michigan to get to Lake Huron.

That's all for now ..... Dan
