We're spending the first two days of March exploring Texas' Palo Duro Canyon State Park, about 30 minutes or so south of Amarillo. The canyon has the distinction of being the 2nd largest canyon in the US. In a lot of ways it looks very much like sections of the Grand Canyon. Unlike the Grand Canyon, the Palo Duro Canyon has a loop road so you can drive down into the canyon. Most of the trails and camping are in the canyon along with a number of "day use" areas. It's very accessible in a way that the Grand Canyon isn't.
We first stopped at the Visitor Center on the rim to get our bearings and learn a little about the canyon. We spent most of the afternoon driving all around the canyon loop road stopping at many (really, I mean MANY) of the pullovers to take pictures or walk back a little on some of the trails (to take more pictures, of course). Tomorrow, March 2nd, we're going back and plan to do several hikes. I'm posting a just a few pictures here - we took so many already that I don't have time now to look at them all so these are very possibly not the best pictures we took (these are just from my iPhone, not my Nikon or the two cameras that Dolores was using).
We've tentatively decided that on Friday we're going to head west to New Mexico, either Santa Fe or Albuquerque. From there we'll probably head south to Carlsbad Caverns. More on that later, though.
That's all for now! .... Dan
