Feb 16 - Bourbon & Horses

Well, we set off on Feb 15th as planned but not without some last minute glitches. Long story but we had to make a last-minute stop at Sears to get a cartop cargo box. You can see from the "before" picture the reason why (Dolores took this from the front seat looking to the rear) - not a spare inch in the car otherwise!

Today we went to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY. A HUGE place! Our tour guide, Fred, was from PA, a retired state-store worker! (For you non-Pennsylvanian's the "state-store" in PA is the state-operated store where you can buy liquor & wine.) We took the "Trace Tour" and really enjoyed it.  The middle two pictures below is of their hand-bottling operation of one of their single-barrel brands. No wonder it costs more! The best part was the post-tour tasting! Tomorrow we're planning to go to a few other places on the "Kentucky Bourbon Trail" on our way down to Mammoth Cave NP.

We then spent the afternoon at Kentucky Horse Park, just north of Lexington. The park is dedicated to everything having to do with horses. It's winter-time and off-season so there weren't anywhere near the usual number of horses to be seen but Dolores did get to "meet" a Triple Crown winner (pacer) named Western Dancer. We got to see two other Kentucky Derby winners as well - "Funny Cide" (2003) & "Go for Gin" (1994). The trainer, Rob, was really friendly (a Steeler fan, too!). Their "International Museum of the Horse" is awesome! We spent about 1-1/2 hours there but rushed through the last 3 or 4 sections in about 30 minutes. You could spend a few hours in the Arabian horse section alone. The park is the final resting place of "Man o' War", arguably the best American Thoroughbred race horse ever. The horse was actually embalmed and buried in a horse-size casket!
