May 1 -- Roadtripping in South Dakota & Nebraska (Day 76)

Today was really mostly a travel day. Probably the first of many.

After leaving Custer SD, we made a short stop at Wind Cave National Park which is just 20 minutes down the road. This was the seventh (eight?) national park created, established in 1903, and the first cave protected under the auspices of the national park system. It shares it's northern border with the Custer State Park. We watched their film and checked out the exhibits and spoke with a few of the park rangers but we didn't take the tour (in season they offer 3 tours) since we needed to be on our way.

We continued south through South Dakota and entered the state of Nebraska. Almost immediately it seemed that the wind started to blow hard!

We made a few stops along the way:

A parody "rest stop" somebody maintains along US-385 just north of Alliance NE.  It consists of hay bales, a toilet, and an easy chair. Oh, and it has WiFi, too.

A few miles south of there, still north of Alliance on US-385 is "Carhenge" (and other car art). It's actually pretty cool to stop for a few minutes if you ever get in the area. Carhenge is modeled after Stonehenge. The guy who came up with the idea had worked in England for several years and was fascinated by Stonehenge. He took the dimensions and layout of Stonehenge and, with his family & friends help, they created Carhenge in 1987. Besides Carhenge, there's some other creative car art on display as well. For a roadside "oddity", this one is really pretty cool.

Oh, yeah. I almost forgot about the Tire Caterpillar we saw at a truck stop in Big Springs NE, just off the interstate.

We then drove onto North Platte NE where we are spending the night (and where I am writing this blog update).

Tomorrow, we plan to continue travelling east for a while before we drop down into Kansas. Stay tuned!

That's all for now ..... Dan
