On Sunday the 23rd we finally left Yellowstone and headed to our next destination -- Grand Teton National Park in Jackson (Jackson Hole) WY. Since the Yellowstone roads south were still closed at Old Faithful, we had to use the west entrance at Madison then head into Idaho to travel south to cross the mountains (the Continental Divide, actually) to get to Jackson WY which is the southern entrance to the Grand Teton NP. On the way in, while still in Idaho, we got a glimpse of the Grand Tetons before the sun went down - it turned out to be the ONLY view we got of them since the weather during the rest of our stay was cloudy. We never saw more than the foothills during our two days there, including the day we left.
We actually stayed an extra night since a major snowstorm blew up in the area of Buffalo, WY (our next stop) and the roads were closed preventing us from getting there.
While we didn't get to see the mountain peaks, we did get to see plenty of wildlife, including several moose. There is a National Elk Refuge (preserve) at Jackson and the elk were starting to migrate from the refuge back to the park. We saw a massive elk herd easily numbering in the many hundreds spread out over a large meadow on the edge of the park. Bison were plentiful as well. And on our drive out of the park we even saw a gray fox trotting down the road!
[Picture later when I have a better connection and more time]
Next stop - Devils Tower.
That's all for now ..... Dan
